5.2- Phagocytosis Flashcards
What do phagocytes do?
They ingest and destroy the pathogen before it can do any harm.
How are the phagocytes attracted to the non-self material?
The phagocytes have several receptors on their cell-surface that helps to recognise foreign material.
What is the second step in phagocytosis? (After the Phagocyte has moved towards the non-self material)
The phagocyte will engulf the foreign material to form a vesicle known as a phagosome.
What does the lysosome do once the foreign material has been engulfed?
Release lysozymes which are enzymes that help to destroy ingested bacteria by hydrolysis.
What happens once the bacteria has been broken down by hydrolysis?
The hydrolysis products are absorbed by the phagocyte.
