5.2 Making Salts From Metals Or Bases Flashcards
Name two materials whose reactions with acids are too violent to be done safely?
Very reactive metals such as sodium and potassium
State the words equation for when metals react with acids
Metal + acid –> a salt + hydrogen
Mash
Name a metal that can safely react with an acid to produce a salt
•zinc •lead •tin •iron Etc
What type of substance are metal oxides or metal hydroxides?
Bases
What is the word equation for neutralisation reactions?
Acid + base –> a salt + water
Name 2 reactions that can be used to produce a salt
- MASH
* neutralisation
How do insoluble metals or bases react with acids?
- It is added a little bit at a time to the acid until all of the acid has reacted
- The mixture is then filtered to remove the excess solid reactant to leave a solution of the salt
- Evaporate the water from the solution to leave the salt to crystallise
Why do we add excess of the base when making a salt?
To neutralise all of the acid
What are chillies made from?
Hydrochloric acid
What are nitrates made from?
Nitric acid
What are sulfates made from?
Sulphuric acid
What is the chemical formula of hydrochloric acid?
HCl
What is the chemical formula for nitric acid?
HNO3
What is the chemical formula for sulphuric acid?
H2SO4
What is produced when nitric acid reacts with magnesium?
Magnesium nitrate + hydrogen
