In-situ urbanisation of Liu Gong Li
-Exemplifies in-situ urbanisation. Village being engulfed by urban growth and is an arrival city on edge of Chongqing (pop 30.48 mill)
rural life = gamble with decades of food panic
those without urban HUKOU STATUS cannot access services so build their own illegal settlements
Urban welfare is not good so leaving the village to apply for Hukou status is risky
Shenzen: rural to urban
No informal housing allowed
so most live in factory accomodation - bunk houses
diffucult, labour intensive farm work for elderly only supported by remittances from children back in cities.
often rural poverty for those left behind, whilst those who join the arrival city make massive gamble on being able to sustain a livelyhood in the city

CYCLICAL RURAL-URBAN MIGRATION IN INDIA
-circular rural-urban migration: migrants often return home for harvest/ wedding season
chain migration - family members take turns to go to the city - often eldest son
migration cycle helps to develop the village and sorts the population, meaning most economically able congregate to the city, whilst those in villages are supported by remittance payments.
