5.2 Flashcards
Law of Conservation of Mass
During chemical, atoms cannot destroyed or created
Decomposition Reactions
When a reactant breaks apart to form several products.
XY——>X+Y
Thermal Decomposition Reaction
Only occurs when heated to high temperatures.
Combination Reaction
Two reactants combine to form a single product.
X+Y——>XY
Precipitation Reaction
When two soluble products combine to form a single insoluble product known as precipitate.
- floating specks
- milky
- cloudy
- solid mass at bottom
Ionic Compounds
Crystalline substances make up of crystal lattices of positive cations and negative anions-have neutral charge
Oxidation Reaction
When a substance combines with oxygen during chemical reaction.
Two types:
-combustion:substances burn in oxygen producing heat and light
-corrosion: metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides. (Rust)
Reduction Reaction
Loses oxygen atoms.
Redox Reactions
When electrons are transferred from one substance to another.
O-xidation
I-s
L-oss
R-eduction
I-s
G-ain
Oxidation is gain of oxygen and loss of electrons
Reduction is loss of oxygen gain of electrons
