5.13 Structure of Larva - internal and external Flashcards
What is the structure of the digestive system in larva?
The digestive system is made up of the small fore gut, large mid gut/ventriculus, and hind gut. The mid gut and hind gut are not connected.
How does a larva consume food?
A larva sucks in its food.
What is the excretory system of larva composed of?
The excretory system consists of four Malpighian tubules that grow thicker in older larva as they fill with waste. There is no connection to the intestine, and more waste is stored in urate cells.
Describe the respiratory system of larva.
The respiratory system is clearly segmented without adaptations found in the adult, featuring 10 pairs of spiracles that are all open permanently. Short tracheal tubes connect to two lateral tubes linked by cross tubes, and there are no air sacs.
What is the structure of the nervous system in larva?
The nervous system has the same segmented structure, with the brain and sub-oesophageal ganglion already formed. Ganglia for segments A8-A10 are fused, while other segments have their own ganglia and can operate independently.
What is the circulatory system of larva like?
The heart ends in A9 and extends forward to the second thoracic segment, consisting of 11 chambers and 10 openings (ostia). Dorsal and ventral diaphragms are present.
What is the fat body in larva?
The fat body fills most of the space in the larva and is creamy white in color. It contains urate cells that store waste.
Where are the silk glands located in larva?
Silk glands are long coiled structures lying near the ventral surface and open to the outside via spinneret.
What occurs from Day 3 to 7 in the larval stage?
The larva is feeding and growing for the first four cycles.
What happens 24 hours after the fourth moult?
The larva is full grown, and the cell is sealed. The larva eats the remaining food.
What is the larva called after the fifth moult?
The larva begins to take the shape of a bee and becomes the pre pupa.
What does the larva do when the cell is capped?
The larva stretches out with its head towards the cap, defecates, and begins to spin its cocoon, including waste material in it.
How long does the prepupa retain the larval skin?
The prepupa retains the larval skin until the fifth moult is completed, which takes about 3-5 days after capping.
What happens upon shedding the larval skin?
The external characteristics of a honey bee become evident: head, eyes, antennae, mouthparts, thorax, legs, and abdomen. Wings are undeveloped.
What develops during the pupa stage before the final sixth moult?
Internal organs develop, with 100 malpighian tubules replacing 4, reproductive organs beginning to develop, and the brain increasing in size.
What happens to the adult cuticle during the pupal stage?
The adult cuticle forms within the larval cuticle and darkens with time.
What occurs when the imago emerges from the last moult?
The imago emerges as a hairy insect covered in sensilla, stays in the cell for 24 hours to allow the cuticle to harden and wings/hairs to dry out before eating its way out of the cell.
