5.1.2.6 Group 7 Flashcards
1
Q
What are group 7 elements called?
A
- halogen
2
Q
Why do halogens have similar reactions?
A
- they have seven electrons in their outer shell
3
Q
What do non-metals exist as?
A
- molecules made of pairs of atoms
4
Q
When non-metals and metals react, what do they form?
A
- ionic compounds
- halide ion carries a -1 charge
5
Q
When non-metals and non-metals react, what do they form?
A
- covalent compounds
- there is a shared pair of electrons
6
Q
A
7
Q
What happens as you go down the halogen group?
A
- relative molecular mass increases
- melting point increases
- boiling point increases
8
Q
Why does reactivity decrease down the group?
A
- halogens react by gaining an electron to increase their number of outer shell electrons from 7 to 8
- the number of shells of electrons increases down the group, so down the group the element attracts the electrons from other atoms less, so can’t react as easily
9
Q
What does a decrease in reactivity mean?
A
- a more reactive halogens can displace a less reactive one in an aqueous solution of it’s salt
