5.1 Vocab Earthquakes Flashcards
seismology
people who study earthquakes
deformation
changes in an object’s shape or form due to the application of a force or forces.
elastic rebound
The elastic rebound theory is an explanation for how energy is spread during earthquakes
seismic waves
Seismic waves are waves of energy that travel through the Earth’s layers, and are a result of an earthquake, explosion, or a volcano that gives out low-frequency acoustic energy.
P waves
P-waves are a type of body wave, called seismic waves in seismology, that travel through a continuum and are the first waves from an earthquake to arrive at a seismograph.
S waves
The S-wave moves as a shear or transverse wave, so motion is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation
surface wave
a surface wave is a mechanical wave that propagates along the interface between differing media, usually as a gravity wave between two fluids with different densities
plastic deformation
an applied force which the deformation energy in this case is transferred through work
