5.1 Senses, Sensation, and Perception Flashcards
perception
begins when a stimulus from the environment stimulates the sense organs. The sense organ tranduces the input into neuronal activity, which then goes to the brain for processing.
sensation
Initial activation of the nervous system, the translation of information about the environment into patterns of neural activity.
percept
Mental representation of that original stimulus
sense
our physiological capacities to provide input from the environment to our neurological system
adaption
tThis is the adjustment of the sensory system’s sensitivity to the current environment and to important changes in the environment.
Range
Each sensory modality responds to a limited range of stimuli. This range is not the same for all species. As limited as our receptor cells may be, we do respond to a wide range of stimulus intensities.
Acuity
Our sensory systems are tuned to respond to different sources of information in the environment. How well we can distinguish among stimuli within a sensory modality, or what we would call acuity
Saccades
Rapid eye movements, they occur three to four times a second
