5.1 Science Vocab page 130 Flashcards
Seismologists
Scientists who study earthquakes.
Tectonic Plates
Big chunky pieces of Earth’s crust.
Fault
A break in the Earth’s crust.
Plastic Deformation
It deforms in a plastic like a piece of molded clay.
Elastic Deformation
When something like a rubber band brakes the broken pieces return to their unstretched shape.
Body Waves
Seismic waves that travel through the Earth’s interior.
Surface Waves
Seismic waves that travels along Earth’s surface.
Primary Waves
Seismic waves that are always spotted 1st and a type of body wave.
Secondary Waves
Type of body wave that that is spotted 2nd (after the p wave.)
Seismology
The study of earthquakes.
Deformation
The bending, tilting, and breaking of the Earth’s crust the change in shape of rock in response to stress.
Elastic Rebound
The sudden return of elastically deformed rock to its undeformed shape.
Seismic Wave
Wave of energy that travels through the Earth away from an earthquake in all directions.
P Wave
Seismic wave that causes particles of rocks to move in a back and forth direction.
S waves
Seismic wave that causes particles to move in a side side direction.
