What do we mean by a monopoly?

What is a discriminating monopolist?
A monopolist who can charge different prices for the same product
What is first degree discrimination?
Every customer is charged a different price
What is second degree discrimination
Different prices are charged on the basis of volume (e.g. electricity)
What is third degree discrimination?
Different prices are charged based on groups (e.g. Gender or age)
Who gains when monopolists price discriminate?
Some customers will benefit. Overall the monopolists will benefit by appropriating the consumer surplus.
