5.1 Hydrological Cycle Flashcards
Cryosphere
The the frozen part of the Earth. Ice covered eg mountains, Artic, Antarctic seas.
Infiltration
The movement of water from the permeable surface to the soil.
Percolation
Movement of water from the soil to the layer of rock below.
Percentage of water in ocean
96.9- lasts 3600 years
Percentage of water in cryosphere.
1.9- lasts 15,000
Percentage of water in terrestrial (ground, soil, biosphere)
1.11- lasts 1 week to 10,000 years.
Percentage of water in atmosphere
0.01- lasts 10 days
Interception storage
Objects on land eg vegetation and buildings that store water before reaching the soil.
Soil water storage
Water being held in small gaps between the soil particles.
Groundwater store
Water stored in the grounds of permeable rock through cracks(limestone) , bedding planes(sedimentary rock) or pores(chalk). Rock with lots of water stores are called aquifers.
River discharge
Output of water from river channel to sea.
