50.5 The Sliding-Filament Model Of Muscle Contraction Flashcards
1
Q
how does a muscle contract
A
the thick and thin filaments slide pst each other longitudinally -Z lines contract and filaments overlap
2
Q
how does a muscle contract (closer)
A
1) myosin binds to ATP, hydrolyzes it (ADP and Pi) and gets into high energy configuration 2) now myosin can bind to actin 3) myosin binds to actin forming a “cross bridge” 4) releases ADP and Pi to return to low energy configuration and causes the thin filament to move toward center and contract
