Who shall be responsible for ensuring on-scene personnel wear appropriate respiratory protection equipment in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this document
TFD Incident Safety Officers
Who shall be responsible for ensuring that crew members:
- Use respiratory equipment that is appropriate for the hazard(s) encountered
- Perform and document daily inspections and donning of respiratory equipment in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this document
- Maintain proficiency in SCBA use
All TFD Company Officers
Who shall be responsible for:
- Ensuring that all fit testing is performed in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this document
- Repairing, replacing and/or maintaining all respiratory protection equipment in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this document
- Maintaining records of all TFD employee fit testing and respiratory protection equipment repairs, replacement and maintenance
The Station 17 Captain
Who shall be responsible for testing, maintaining and repairing air compressor equipment in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this document.

What is Grade D breathing air?
Air for SCBA cylinders that meets the following minimum requirements:
• Water vapor level of 24 ppm or less
• 19.5-23.5% oxygen
• Condensed hydrocarbon of no more than 5 mg per cubic meter of air
• CO content of no more than 10 ppm
• CO2 level of no more than 1,000 ppm
Define Oxygen deficient.
An atmosphere that:
• Contains less than 19.5% oxygen by volume OR
• Has a partial pressure of 148 millimeters of mercury or less
What is PHI?

Why does The Tacoma Fire Department (TFD) have in place a written respiratory protection policy?
It is state law. To be in accordance with WAC 296-305 and WAC 296-842.
TFD personnel shall be permitted to function in a hazardous atmosphere only if s/he has:
a. SCBA with a properly fitted
b. Inspected all components of the respirator to ensure it is in proper working condition
TFD personnel shall not be assigned to duties where respiratory protection is required until s/he has:
a. Received respiratory protection training
b. Obtained medical approval
c. Undergone applicable fit testing in accordance with the guidelines set forth in this document
TFD personnel shall wear SCBA when operating in:
a. A known contaminated atmosphere
b. An atmosphere that is known to be oxygen deficient
c. An atmosphere suspected of being contaminated or oxygen deficient
d. An atmosphere that rapidly may become hazardous or contaminated
e. Structure fire overhaul operations
f. An atmosphere where asbestos fibers may be present
TFD personnel shall wear an N95 mask when transporting an unmasked medical patient with suspected or confirmed infectious tuberculosis in an enclosed vehicle.
