what are the political causes for the five year plans?

A

Stalin believed that the crash industrialization was because of the successes of collectivization. He insulted Lenin’s successes and failures in a public speech on his birthday and stated that it was no longer ‘Leninist Russia’ but i was now Stalinist Russia and it was only the start. Q

what were the successes for the first 5 year plan?

A
  1. It caused the economy to increase economy growth by 14%, America and Europe were in a depression therefore it meant they were keeping up to date with other countries. In terms of iron coal ans steel, they increased output more than any other economic system.
  2. the Urban population trebled and peasants moved to cities to take on unskilled jobs. Many members of the working class were promoted and became managers of new soviet industries. Education was reformed and workers were encouraged to go to classes in technical subjects and university became accessible to people with minimal qualifications. The government introduced proletarian advancement and removed bourgeoisie specialists and replaced with red class specialists.

Q

what were the failures of the first 5 year plan?

A
  1. Although production had increased, many of the official targets never got met and large scale fraud allowed Stalin to claim they were being met. Party officials who didn’t meet their targets were demoted or sacked. and sometimes put on trial or executed and local administers tended to lie about how much they can produce of raw materials and created the impression that their targets had been exceeded.

Q

explain the abolition of the free market?

A

he wanted to get rid of the free market and replace it with a centrally organised economy. He thought the first 5 year plan was to chaotic and imprecise, It was also unable to destroy the free market and it encouraged the formation of the black market. There was a shortage of consumer goods like vodka, cigarettes and footwear and food, they introduced speculators that are subject to show trials which usually ended in their exile to forced labor camps.
