Depending on the circumstances, there are various types of medication orders that might be used. The most common types of medication orders are described below. Remember that all medication orders must be prescribed (ordered) by a licensed healthcare provider.

Single Order: THis type of order is given for a one-time use only. The order includes the name of the medication, dosage, route, time, or administration, and the reason the medication is being given.
E.g., Benadryl 50mg po 1 hour before breakfast for one dose.

Standing Order: This type of order or set of orders are prewritten by the licensed health care provider. The orders
provide specific instructions, guidelines, procedures, treatments, and/or medications for individuals in certain situations. Can be also called a Medical Directive.
E.g., Duclolax suppository 1 suppository pr (rectally) if no BM (bowel movement) for three days.

Example: Lasix 40mg po (by mouth) now.

PRN order: With this type of medication order, medication is given “as necessary” or “when needed”. The order includes the name of the medication, dosage, route
and the reason the medication is to be given.
Example: Percocet 2 tabs po (by mouth) q4h (every 4 hours) prn (when needed)
for back pain.
