- inspirational orator
- speeches based around simple arguments that appealed to workers e.g. hatred of the Treaty
- promised to create jobs - appealed to workers and socialists - and rebuild the German army - appealed to ex-soldiers and nationalists

- February 1920 - Hitler and Drexler wrote ‘Twenty-Five Point Programme’
- included some socialist policies e.g. redistribution of land
- included some nationalist policies e.g. land and colonies lost to Treaty would be regained
- became a ‘catch-all’ party that appealed to a variety of people

- used to control crowds at meetings, suppress opposition, and protect Hitler
- paraded the streets = people thought that only the NSDAP could stand up to communism
- 1922 = 800, 1923 = 55,000
