5. symbiosis Flashcards
what is symbiosis
an co-evolved intimate relationship between members of two different species.
Types of symbiotic relationship include: parasitism, mutualism.
describe parasitism
A parasite is an organism that lives on or in another organism (the host).
A parasite benefits in terms of energy or nutrients, whereas its host is harmed by the loss of these resources
describe parasite hosts
The primary host is the one the parasites live and reproduce in. Some parasitic life cycles involve intermediate (secondary) hosts to allow them to complete their life cycle
The most effective parasites do not cause the death of the host. Changing hosts is difficult and subject to chance
what are the three ways parasites can be transmitted
-direct contact
-resistant stages
-vectors
examples of direct contact transmittion
head lice passing from one person to another
describe resistant stages
are a part of the parasite’s life-cycle where they are resistant to adverse environmental conditions and can survive for long periods of time.
describe vectors
an intermediate host which transfers the parasite directly into the primary host (eg. mosquitoes transferring malaria)
describe mutualism
Both mutualistic partner species benefit in an interdependent relationship
