5 Pillars of Islam Flashcards
Shahadah
To believe that there is only one god and that Muhammad is his/her messenger. In order to officially become Muslim you have to say the Shahadah in front of witnesses.
Salah
To pray five times a day. Muslims can pray whenever they want, but there are five set prayers, so Allah (God) is remembered through the day.
Sawm
To fast during the month of Ramadan, during this month Muslims also refrain from sexual relations. Sawm is meant to build up Muslims’ self-discipline. This is also a sacrifice to Allah.
Zakah
To give money to charity/ help the less fortunate. This stops Muslims from being greedy. Also, like Sawm it is a sacrifice to Allah.
Hajj
To go on a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca once in their lifetime (if possible). This shows that they are thinking about Allah.
