(5) New Media, Participatory Popular Culture, Hate Watching, Will to Representation Flashcards
the news media exerts
a considerable influence over our perceptions of groups and lifestyles of which we have little first-hand experience.
News media has the power to create and define
the boundaries of debates whilst also organising opinion and developing world views by providing structures of understanding into which isolated and unarticulated attitudes and beliefs may be fitted
Hall says views the news not as independent journalism but as
an ideological practice - journalism is part of the state control apparatus
just about conveying ideas, thoughts and values about subjects vs actual facts.
When was the ‘our crime problem’ created?
50s-90s massive increase in crime, notion of normal ppl vs the criminals
when did the crime drop occur?
after the 90s - no definitive academic answer yet as to why
As a result of a perceived rise in violent crimes what occurred?
Beccaria’s Just Deserts approach - crime should be
swift, certain, proportionate
Penal populism
a media driven political process whereby politicians compete with each other to impose tougher prison sentences on offenders based on a perception that crime is out of control.
How does penal populism result in moral crusades?
through the use of moral panics and folk devils by rule creators and moral crusaders
What is an issue with penal populism
reflects the use of elite-interest groups to divert attention away from other major causes of crime (white collar/corporate crime etc) to serve the interests of the elite in maintaining control
News power is the exertion of
considerable influence over perceptions of our groups and lifestyles of which we have little 1st hand experience
What is the effect of news media power?

1) professional (common sense journalism, news above all interests)
2) ideological (independent journalism an illusion - part of state’s controlled aparatus –> Chomsky’s propaganda model)
3) social (everyone is involved in practice)

as it’s 1 dimensional/monologue, use celebritification, sensationalism, graphics and emotion

2) Immorality
3) Incompetence
Court of public opinion focuses on issues that
aren’t acknowledged by institutions as criminal but have some aspects of morality which are wrong –> extends what someone would actually be tried for in court
What has new media created a desire for?
a will to representation - a desire to achieve representation and to communicate –> contests the theoretical distinction btw media and society (individuals now part of the news making process)
What does a desire to be recognised through a will to representation result in with new media?
shock value –> controversy sells!! (Trump)
Postmodern carnival of crime has a hyperfocus on
bad news and scandal - everything is a crisis etc
