5 Methods of extraction Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 5 methods of extraction
A
- Reduction
- Electrolysis
- Displacement
- Phytomining
- Bioleaching
2
Q
Which of the 5 methods of extraction are least harmful to the enviroment
A
- Phytomining
- Bioleaching
3
Q
What is reduction
A
- The removal of oxygen
- Carbon is used to reduce metal oxides below it in reactivity series
4
Q
When can carbon be used in reduction
A
only to reduce those metals that are below it in the reactivity series
5
Q
What is electrolysis
A
- The breakdown of an ionic compound using electricity
- Used for metals more reactive than carbon
6
Q
Why is electrolysis bad
A
- It consumes lots of energy
- it has many staged
- it produces CO2 which causes climate change
7
Q
What is displacement
A
- When a more reactive metal pushes out a less reactive metal from its compound
- Can be used for most metals
8
Q
Displacement example:
Zinc + Iron chloride —>
A
zinc chloride + iron
9
Q
Explain Phytomining
A
- Plant plants into soil with a high concentration of desired metal ion
- Metal ion gradually builds up in leaves
- Plants are harvest and burnt to ash
- Metal ion purified from leaves
- Filter the ash and the desired metal ion will be left on filter paper
10
Q
What is Bioleaching
A
- When bacteria is used to extract a metal from its compound
11
Q
Explain Bioleaching
A
- bacteria use up the energy in a bond
- This results in a Leachate solution
- Filtration separates metal from solution
