Ethics
Principles or standards that govern proper conduct
Morality
Personal belief system derived from family, school, religion or environment
Professional ethics
Commonly held values that guide professional behavior
Hippocratic Oath
First used by medical professionals in the fourth century.
Accountability, confidentiality, and good moral character.
Florence Nightingale
Significant influence on medical ethics. Never knowingly harm a patient!
Basic Ethical Foundations
Autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence , justice, confidentiality
Autonomy
Exists for the clients participation in his or her own care. Client ownership
Beneficence
Encompasses the notion that you will make ethical decisions in good faith based upon the good of the client first
Nonmaleficence
Foundation of trust is in the belief that you will do no harm to patient
Justice
Assures there is recourse in the event they feel they are treated unjust or unfairly
Confidentiality
Medical info will be protected
Competence
Don’t engage in activities youre not qualified for or trained to perform
Integrity
Trust is the basic therapeutic element in the tech/pt relationship
Empathy
Is the ability to experiment or understand the thoughts and feelings of others
CARE
Courtesy, appearance, respect and empowerment
