Give a brief description for the 5” Gun.
The 5-inch Gun subsystem is a fully-automated, single-barrel, rapid-fire weapon that can be used against shore targets, surface targets and aircraft flying at low altitude.
What does the loading system consist of?
a. lower hoist,
b. loader,
c. mechanical fuse setter, and
d. slide-mounted components.
Slide-mounted components consist of the:
- cradle,
- rammer,
- breech mechanism,
- recoil pistons,
- counter-recoil pistons,
- empty case tray, and
- empty case ejector.
The gun laying system consists of the:
train system and elevation system.
The gun mount control system consist of the:
a. Power panel EP1
b. Control and test panel EP2
c. Display panel EP3 and
d. Gun Interface Cabinet (GIC)
The structural components consist of the:
a. stand,
b. carriage,
c. slide,
d. gun barrel housing,
e. gun barrel, and
f. shield
The 5” Gun subsystem is controlled by:
Remote control or Local control
The 5-inch Gun subsystem has two modes of operation:
Automatic control mode and Step control mode.
The automatic control mode allows the following selections:
a. Auto-load
b. Auto-unload
c. Auto-off load, and
d. Auto-strike-down
What does the selection “Auto-load” do?
Automatically sequences the electrical, hydraulic and mechanical functions of the gun loading system. Rounds are moved from the lower loading station or upper loading station to the loader drum and/or breech without further manual switching.
What does the selection “Auto-unload” do?
Reverses the upper loading system and automatically returns rounds from the cradle to the upper hoist.
What does the selection “Auto-offload” do?
Reverses the lower loading system and automatically returns rounds from the upper loading station and intermediate stations to the lower loading station in the magazine for off loading.
What does the selection “Auto-strike-down” do?
It is used mainly for re-arming. The lower accumulator emergency motor is used to reposition the lower hoist. The lower hoist then raises or lowers the storage tanks containing projectiles or powder cases between the magazine and the loader drum. The upper loading station, intermediate station and lower loading station must be empty before performing an Auto-strike-down.
Brief description of Step Control Mode.
The step control mode allows five functions to be done manually, all except step-exercise must be done sequentially. The STEP CONTROL push buttons must be pressed in the correct loading sequence to allow the operation to be done.
The step control functions are:
a. Step-load
b. Step-unload
c. Step-off load
d. Step-strike-down
e. Step-exercise
