5 Forces Flashcards
What is a Force?
A force is a push or pull that acts upon an object as a result of that object’s interactions with its surroundings
Is force a scalar or a vector quantity and why?
It is a vector quantity, as it has a magnitude and a direction.
What is a contact force?
A force that occurs as a result of two objects making physical contact with each other.
What is a non-contact force?
A force which acts on an object without coming into physical contact with it.
Is tension a contact or non-contact force?
Tension is a contact force.
Is friction a contact or a non-contact force?
Friction is a contact force.
What is weight?
The force of gravity acting on an object.
Is weight a contact or non contact force?
Weight is a non-contact force.
Is normal contact force a contact or a non-contact force?
Normal contact force is a contact force.
Is electromagnetism a contact or a non-contact force?
Electromagnetism is a non-contact force.
Is magnetic force a contact or a non contact force?
Magnetic force is a non-contact force.
Is air resistance a contact or non-contact force?
Air resistance is a contact force.
Nam the 3 non-contact forces.

What is a scalar quantity?
A Scalar quantity is a quantity that only has a magnitude.
What is a vector quantity?
A vector quantity is a quantity that has both magnitude and a direction.
What does the length of each arrow on a free body diagram indicate?
The length of each arrow indicates the magnitude of that force.
What does the direction of each arrow on a free body diagram indicate?
The direction of each arrow indicates the direction of the force.
What is a resultant force?
The resultant force is the overall force acting on an object taking into account all the different forces acting on it.
What does it mean if the forces acting on an object to be in equilibrium?
All the forces acting on an object balance out.
How do you use force vectors to find the resultant force?
Arrange all the forces arrows tip to tail.
The resultant force will be the arrow that stretches from the start to the end.
What is a bearing?
A bearing is an angle measured clockwise from the North direction
How many digits should you use when writing bearings?
three (e.g. 067 not 67)
Are bearings measured clockwise or anticlockwise from North?
Clockwise
