5 - Factors Affecting VO2 Max/Aerobic Power Flashcards
1
Q
Define VO2 Max?
A
VO2 max is the maximum volume of oxygen that can be taken up and used by the muscles per minute. An individuals VO2 max will determine endurance performance in sport.
2
Q
Name factors that affect VO2 max?
A
- Physiological (increased maximum cardiac output, stroke volume, cardiac hypertrophy, levels of haemoglobin, red blood cell count, stores of glycogen, myoglobin content, capillarisation around the muscle, number and size of mitochondria, surface area of alveoli, lactate tolerance, greater heart rate range, less oxygen being used for heart muscle so more available to muscles).
- Training (VO2 max can be improved by up to 10-20% following a period of aerobic training (continuous, fartlek and aerobic interval).
- Genetics (inherited factors of physiology limit possible improvement).
- Difference in ages (as we get older our VO2 max declines).
- Gender (men’s VO2 max is generally 20% higher than women’s).
- Body composition (a higher % of body fat decreases VO2 max).
- Lifestyle (smoking, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and fitness can reduce VO2 max).
