Executive brain functioning
A combination of cognitive understanding (organization of issues/decision making) and emotional regulation
cognitive empathy
understanding the other’s emotions, see the world through their eyes. Centered in prefrontal cortex, specifically in the midcingulate context and dorsal medial prefrontal cortex.
affective empty
experiencing the other person’s emotional state. Often at the unconscious level and our task is to make the client more cognitively aware of their emotional life. Found in the insula
mentalizing
holistic cognitive view of clients. The understanding of why a client is thinking and behaving as they are. Also Theory of Mind (ToM)
checkout/perception check
Periodically checking in with client to see how the skill was received. “Did I hear you correctly?”
Summarizing
summarizing the client comments and integrate thoughts emotions and behaviors. Similar to paraphrasing but used over a longer time span
encouraging
encourage short responses that help the client keep talking. Verbal or non verbal
paraphrasing
Shorten or clarify the essence of what has been said, be sure to use the client’s main words.
four dimensions of an accurate paraphrase
Sentence stem (Could include name + what I hear you saying is)
Key Words (use exact words from lient that include main ideas)
Essence of what the client said
