Q

What is a multiband EQ?

A

Combines several filters in one unit, enabling you to control a large part of the frequency spectrum.

Q

What sort of frequencies are described as lo or hi?

A

Hi is typically above 10kHZ. Low is typically below 100Hz and Mid is everything in between.

6
Q

Describe compression.

A

Behaves like an automatic volume control, lowering the volume when it goes above a certain level (threshold).

Q

How does compression work?

A

By reducing the highest parts of the signal (peaks), a compressor raises the overall level of the signal, increasing the perceived volume.

Q

What does the threshold setting do in a compressor?

A

Sets the threshold level - so signals above this threshold value are reduced in level.

Q

What does the ratio do in a compressor?

A

A ratio saying 6:1 means that a signal exceeding the threshold by 6db will be attenuated down to 1db above the threshold.

Q

What does the output gain do in a compressor?

A

Since compression introduces attenuation, this can be compensated by raising the output volume.

Q

What does attack do in a compressor?

A

Determines the amount of time it takes for the compressor to react when the signal exceeds the threshold.

Q

What does the release do in a compressor?

A

Determines the amount of time it takes for the compressor to stop reducing the signal after the signal level falls below the threshold.

Q

What does a limiter do?

A

Similar to compressor in that it reduces the signal when it exceeds a set threshold. However, instead of gradually lowering the signal levels - a limiter quickly reduces any signal louder than the threshold, to the threshold level. Main use is to prevent clipping.

Q

What does a noise gate do?

A

Lowers the signal level whenever it falls below the threshold. Gets rid of background noise. Usually used to eliminate low level noise or hum in an audio signal.
