5. Drug action, Drug study and Evidence-based nursing Flashcards
1
Q
What are the principles of Drug Action?
A
- Drugs do not create new response, but it alters existing physiologic activity.
-Drugs interact with the body in several
different ways. It forms chemical bonds with
receptors. - Most drugs have several different atoms
within each molecule that interlock into
various receptors. - Drugs interact with receptor to stimulate a
response are known as AGONISTS. - Once drug is administered, a drug goes
through 4 phases: Absorption, Distribution,
Metabolism and Excretion
2
Q
Facts about the Lipid solubility: blood brain barrier?
A
- Found within the walls of capillaries and
vessels. - Protective system which keeps many things
(foreign invaders, poison) away from the CNS
3
Q
Facts about the Placenta Breastmilk?
A
- Many drugs readily pass through the placenta
and affect the developing fetus. - It is NOT the best to administer drug to
pregnant women due to possible risk to fetus. - Given ONLY when the BENEFIT CLEARLY
OUTWEIGHS THE RISK.
4
Q
What are the factors affecting the body’s response to drug?
A
Weight, Age, Sex, Physiologic factors, Pathologic Factors, Genetic Factors, Immunologic Factors, Psychologic Factors, Environmental Factors, Tolerance, Cumulation effects.
5
Q
What are the parts of a drug study?
A
- Drug Details
- Indication
- Contraindications
- Mechanism of actions
- Side effects/ Adverse effects
- Nursing Responsibilities- assess, plan,
intervene, evaluate.
