5 Distortions Flashcards
Theory and Application
What causes distortion?
Uneven heating and cooling led to uneven expansion and contraction.
If heat is applied to one side of a plate, which direction will the material be distorted?
Toward the heat.
Will all metals have the same amount of distortion under the same conditions?
No, the amount of metal distorts depends on its thermal conductivity as well as it’s coefficient of linear expansion.
What is the difference between Distortion and warpage?
Nothing
Is it possible to totally prevent distortion?
Probably not, but usually it can be controlled to an acceptable level.
Is there any downsides to restraining the weldment?
Yes, there will be residual stresses in the weld which will reduce its strength.
Shrinkage in a weld is caused by ____________.
