5. Coping with Grief Flashcards
grief trajectories are
common trends in how people handle grief and adapt to loss
grief trajectories are
common trends in how people handle grief and adapt to loss
The most common grief trajectories are
Resilience
Recovery
Complicated or prolonged grief
A recent qualitative study by (Lenferink, de Keijser, Piersma, & Boelen, 2018) examined grief trajectories in the relatives of long-term missing persons and found that
most participants described trajectories that reflected the resilient or recovery trajectories
those experiencing prolonged grief are likely to have different clinical needs to those whose grief follows
resilient or recovery paths
Early findings suggest that while prolonged grief is uniquely associated with greater interpersonal dependency, the resilience trajectory is associated with
a more positive worldview and younger age
A recent study by Mancini, Sinan, and Bonanno (2015) explored and identified predictors of grief trajectories in bereaved spouses. They focused on.
person-related factors, perceptions/memories of their deceased spouse, and social factors
Participants in (Mancini, Sinan, and Bonanno (2015) that were classified as resilient differed from those classified as prolonged grievers, such that resilient participants reported significantly
Lower attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance;
Lower destructive detachment;
Greater emotional stability and healthy dependency;
Great ability to derive comfort from memories of their deceased spouse, yet a lower sense of a continuing bond;
Less loneliness and greater ability to disclose to others.
Milic, Muka, Ikram, Franco, and Tiemeier (2017) reported both cross-sectional and longitudinal data on predictors of bereavement severity and persistence. The cross-sectional results found that
females, those who lost a child, lower education and higher depressive symptoms were associated with greater severity. Longitudinally, at a 6-year follow up, baseline grief severity was the only significant predictor of grief persistence.
