Can’t over-socialize
Introducing dogs to cats. How should it be done?
Introduce them as early as possible during socialization development stage
never leave them alone together for first meetings - one in crate may be better
watch dogs body language and cats, remove if needed
How should you introduce dogs to kids?
Young children should never be left alone
a screaming kid could be a prey object for dogs
chiclren should never put their face close to a dogs face
they should not hug, ride or pull ears/tails
in danger - Be a tree!
What is submissive urination?
Usually inherited from parents
Common in females
puppies will outgrow it when they’re more confident
obedience train your dog ^^
Puppy classes help build confidence

Be boring and dont give them attention. Help with confidence building training and teach them calm ways to greet guests

In young dogs its worse when greeting new guests
they are still developing sphincter control and will outgrow it
owners/guests should remain calm and greet on good floors
How do fears and phobias affect dogs
- Most dogs are fear biters and are excellent in their home environment
- fears could accidentally be taught by owners
- could stem from a lack of socialization
- may stem from a bad experience
How does separation anxiety present itself?
Distress at being left alone (howl, bark, chew, dig, scratch at doors, defecate)
- normally reinforced by human returning back quickly
- will be overtly clingy to owners
How do you treat separation anxiety
Start with planned departures without the dog becoming stressed. put on coat, keys, go to door and leave and then come back. repeat and extend time periods
Punishment will not work
Consider using dap dog appeasing pheromone
Describe crates and its usefulness
Good training tools. Used when puppies are 4wks of age - safe place
should not be used as a punishment and should be their safe place and get cozy.
will have fewer issues when confined or require kenneling
Describe singleton puppies and some issues associated
-they will miss out on vital experiences for normal social development
-Should be with littermates for 7-8 wks for normal social development
-in typical litter, pups have constant contact with puppies crawling over them
-inability to read body language
-no bit inhibition
-no regard for authority
-lack of impulse control
-touch sensitivity and frustration
What can you do to help singleton puppies?
Interupt them when they’re nursing
have puppy spend time with same age puppies
join another litter if possible
work on bite inhibition
handle puppy LOTS
Why do dogs bite?
They don’t have hands
resource guarding, protecting territory, sleeping and startled, old and in pain, frightened, no bit inhibition, overly excited
How can you help with chewing?
- Teething? Provide appropriate toys
- Boredom? Physical and mental stimulation, physical
enrichment - Chewing can lead to a foreign body which can lead to a surgery.
- Confinement (crate) for periods of no supervision
