5. Bandaging Flashcards
8 functions of bandages
Wound/incision Secrure dressing Inhibit excessive granulation tissue Reduce swelling, movement, edema Support Decrease dead space Reduce post-op hemorrhage/edema Prevent contamination
Bandaging principles
Smooth 1˚, 2˚, 3˚ layers - secured with gauze Change is soiled, wet or slipped Secure with cohesive or self adhesive Snug placement - lame = REMOVE Adequate width Pull flexor tendons medially
Bandage types
Foot bandage Distal limb bandage Full limb Abdominal Face Stent
1˚ Layer
Telfa, hypertonic dressing, kerlix AMD< hydrogel, calcium alginate
Directly onto wound - sterile, non-adherent, porous
2˚ Layer
Cotton roll, sheet cotton, rediRoll
Support and padding
prevents excessive compression and protects limb
Absorbant for exudate
3˚ layer
Vetwrap, coflex, elastieken, elastoplast
Secures previous layers
Rigidity and support, protects from contamination
50% overlap!
Distal limb bandaging overview
Extends from just below carpus/tarsus
Extends below coronary band
Full limb “stack” bandage overview
Large wounds - swelling/cellulitis
Coaptation for temporary fracture stabilization
Extends below coronary band to proximal carpus/tarsus
Stack a secondary cotton over the 2˚ layer covering the proximal aspect
Stent Bandage overview
Bandage sutured to a wound or incision site
Create suture loops and string umbilical tape
Abdominal bandage overview
Colic sx or thoracic/abdominal wounds
Typical 3 layers
Sweat bandage overview
Decreases edema
Homemade, nitrofurazone ointment, DMSO, epsom salts
cover with saran wrap
Remove and clean limb daily - scalding
Robert Jones Bandage overview
Layers and layers of cotton - heavy and expensive
Perserves blood supply and supports fractures
should be 2x size of limb
Splint material options
PVC 1x4" wood Metal Fiberglass cast material Commercial - KIMZEY LEG SAVER
Splint uses
Fracture stabilization for transportation
Reduce/eliminate flexion/extension of joints
Must immobilize joint above and joint below
Bandage application
GLOVES Roll tendons medially R- clockwise L- counterclockwise Secure without tension
Radial fracture stabilization
Robert jones bandage
Palmar splint from heel to elbow
Lateral splint from hoof to whithers
Olecranon fracture stabilization
Stack bandage w/ palmar splint
from heel to top of elbow
Thomas Schroeder splint
Radial and tibial fractures in farm animals
Cast the limb to incorporate the splint
Can be used for rupture gastrocnemius
