Punishment.
‘Eye for an eye’

A

•Aims to deter the offender and general public of committing crime.
•Punishment is seen as a way to achieve justice for the victim and society, the aim can be seen as ‘an eye for an eye’ approach of dealing with crime.
•A judge ensures the punishment reflects the severity of the offence committed.
•The most severe example is a mandatory custodial life sentence.

Reparation.

A

•Focuses on the defender making amends with the victim for the harm caused by their actions.
•Can be achieved by ordering the offender to pay compensation to the victim or by ‘ORDERING RESTITUTION’ which means returning stolen property back to the victim.
•Also local reparation projects which bring offenders and victims together do the offender can make direct reparations with the victim.
•Promotes accountability and promotes healing for the victim and the community.

Confinement, imprisonment

A

•Focuses on public protection
•Removing the offender out of society as they are considered a significant risk.
•Examples are imprisonment or other forms of confinement such as a curfew or an electronic tag, which prevents the offender from committing further crimes whilst they serve their sentence.
•In return society is protected from crime.

A

•Helps to reform the offender and allows them to integrate back into society as a better person, and an ordinary law abiding citizen.
•This helps to reduce the likelihood of reoffending.
•An example of rehabilitation & reformation is a community order with a requirement to attend anger management classes, or drug and alcohol treatment programmes.
