5 Flashcards
A structure composed of slender members joined together
at their endpoints.
TRUSS
The members commonly used in construction consist of wooden struts, metal bars, angles or channels.
TRUSS
The linear members are subject only to BLANK
compression or tension.
The horizontal pieces forming the top and bottom of the truss are called the BLANK
Chords
the sloping and vertical pieces connecting the chords are collectively called the BLANK

CLASSIFICATION OF
COPLANAR TRUSSES
- Simple Truss
- Compound Truss
- Complex Truss
constructed by starting with a basic
triangular element and connecting two members to form an additional element.
Simple Truss
formed by connecting two or more simple trusses together. Used to support loads acting over a large span since it is cheaper to construct lighter compound truss than to use a heavier single truss.
Compound Truss
one that cannot be classified as being Either simple or compound.
Complex Truss
A truss is externally unstable if all of its reactions are concurrent or
parallel.
External Stability
A truss can often be checked by careful inspection of the arrangement of its members.
Internal Stability
Consist of members joined together at their ends to form a stable three-dimensional structure.
