5/11215 Flashcards
Chromosomes
A threadlike structure within a cell’s nucleus that contains DNA that is passed from one generation to the next.
Double helix
The shape of a DNA molecule.
Nitrogen bases
Molecules that contain nitrogen and other elements.
Adenine
a compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acids. A purine derivative, it is paired with thymine in double-stranded DNA.
Thymine
a compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acids.
Guanine
a compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acids.
Cytosine
a compound that is one of the four constituent bases of nucleic acids.
Gene
A sequence of DNA that determines a trait and is passed from parent to offspring.
DNA Replication
Before a cell divides, the process in which DNA copies itself.
RNA
ribonucleic acid, a nucleic acid present in all living cells. Its principal role is to act as a messenger carrying instructions from DNA for controlling the synthesis of proteins, although in some viruses RNA rather than DNA carries the genetic information.
Uracil I
a compound found in living tissue as a constituent base of RNA. In DNA its place is taken by thymine.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring.
