4VL Graphical representation of data Flashcards
How can data be represented graphically?
- Bar charts
- Line charts
- Histogram
- Boxplots
- and many more…
What graphes need to do?
Graphs need to:
▪ Be easily understandable & clearly labelled, i.e. are all axis
labelled, is there a title?
▪ Show more than the obvious, i.e. added value?
Why are graphs good?
- A picture says more than 1000 words…
- A lot of information can be visualized in graphs → nice
for project reports, Bachelor thesis,….
What do bar charts represent?
Simple representation of the values for categorical variables
Why does bar chart should start with 0
It can be misleading
What rules should bar chart follow?
- Start with 0
- Have reason on predictions
- Make sense in timing
- Exactly same proportions
What is combined bar chart good for?
- For more than one categorical variable
- Include information on the variability of the data in bar
chart
What are line charts used for?
▪ Used for time series data
Time series: data for consecutive time points
Combined line charts are widely used.
What does histograms show?
- Shows the pattern of the whole dataset
What are histograms based on?
type of charts
▪ Based on bar charts
What rules should histograms follow?
- Columns/bars are proportional to the frequency (= how many observations are in a specific interval)
- All intervals are shown, even if they are empty
- Same width of the bins/bars
