4th para Flashcards
What did Segerstrom and Miller (2004) find?
Meta-analysis of 300+ studies examining stress-related changes in immune parameters
Acute stress - body prepared for quick response to infection or injury
Chronic stress - decreases in both natural and specific immunity
What was Kiecolt-Glaser et al (1995) study?
•Skin blisters induced in caregivers and control
•Caregivers took 9 days longer to heal than controls
and had lower levels of the cytokine interleukin-1 in blood
•IL-1 attracts phagocytes to wounds which then remove infectious agents - this signalling system suppressed in caregivers
What is Cohen et Al (1999) stress and respiratory infections study?
-Injected subjects w/ influenza virus
•Higher stress at baseline associated with greater symptom scores and higher IL-6 production
•IL-6 involved in inflammatory immune response that helps rid the body of virus and produces symptoms
Body needs enough to rid body of virus but also not too much or it’ll produce symptoms (e.g fever)
•Stress interferes with body’s ability to turn off cytokine production
Cohen (2005)
Stress may increase susceptibility to respiratory infection by disruption regulation of cytokines
Chen and Miller (2004)
that stress worsens asthma symptoms by accentuating inflammatory responses to environmental triggers
