Q

Why do rivers deposit sediment on the floodplain?

A

Flooding - the river spreads out over the land either side

This increases friction, reduces energy, material is deposited

Q

What sediment do rivers deposit where?

A

Larger material first (e.g. upstream / near the channel)

Smaller material last (e.g. downstream / further away)

Q

How do levees form?

A

During floods
Water and sediment come out out of the channel
Loss of velocity, deposition of sediment, heaver material first and nearer the channel

Q

How do deltas form?

Sediment is deposited in layers which build up in a fan

Smaller material travel the furthest
