4b.2 - Deposition Processes and Landforms Flashcards
What do rivers deposit on a floodplain?
Any sediment that is too large to be carried
Why do rivers deposit sediment on the floodplain?
Flooding - the river spreads out over the land either side
This increases friction, reduces energy, material is deposited
When do rivers deposit sediment?
When they lose energy
What sediment do rivers deposit where?
Larger material first (e.g. upstream / near the channel)
Smaller material last (e.g. downstream / further away)
What are levees
Natural embankments either side of a river
How do levees form?
During floods
Water and sediment come out out of the channel
Loss of velocity, deposition of sediment, heaver material first and nearer the channel
Where do deltas form?
When the river reaches an ocean/lake and loses velocity
How do deltas form?
Sediment is deposited in layers which build up in a fan
Smaller material travel the furthest
