* Gateways
What are the purposes of network devices?
Connect different networks allowing packets to reach their destinations.
How do routers send packets?
Routers send packets to their recipient via the fastest possible route.
• This may be the route that involves the lowest number of hops or the route that is the least congested at the time.
What is the fastest possible route?
Route that involves the lowest number of hops, or the route that is the least congested at the time.
What do routers hold tables for?
Routers hold tables with information relating to the fastest routes to certain devices which they frequently update so as to enable maximum performance.
What happens when two networks use different protocols?
Packets must be modified so as to conform to both protocols.
What do gateways do?
- Strip away most of the packets details leaving just the packets contents.
- Gateway then gives the packets new sender and receiver addresses which comply to the new protocol.
What is the URL?
Address assigned to files on the internet.
What is the purpose of different protocols in URLs?
Used to access different types of files in different ways
What is the purpose of the subdomain?
