49.1 Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
PNS
-cranial and spina nerves with their ganglia
cranial nerves
connect the brain with locations of head and super body
spinal nerves
-run between spinal nerves and parts of body below head
Efferent and Afferent
some cranial have both -all spinal nerves have both
*efferent
neurons -motor neurons and -autonomic nervous system (body parts) –sympathetic, parasympathetic, enteric
*afferent
just the sensory neurons
Motor system
neurons that send signals to skeletal muscle
autonomic nervous system
control smooth and cardiac muscle -digestive, cardiovascular, excretory, endocrine systems (divided into sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric)
sympathetic vs parasympathetic divisions
-sympathetic: arousal and energy generation-heart faster, adrenaline… -parasympathetic: calling and self maintenance
enteric division
-neurons in the digestive tract, pancreas, and gall bladder –secretion -control smooth muscle that make peristalsis (contractions that push stuff down tubes) –can be regulated by sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions
