4.8 - The Young Modulus Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Young Modulus?
A
The measure of the ability of a material to withstand changes in length with an added load.
2
Q
What does the Young Modulus tell us?
A
-Gives information about the stiffness of a material (k)
- helps engineers make sure the materials they are using can withstand sufficient forces
3
Q
What is the Young Modulus defined as? (equation)
A
Youngs modulus = tensile stress / tensile strain
YM = FL / AΔL
F = force
L = original length
A = cross-sectional area
ΔL = extension
4
Q
What are the units for the Young Modulus?
A
Pascals (Pa). The same as stress.
5
Q
What is the gradient of a stress-strain graph?
A
The Young Modulus. (where it is linear)
