4.8 Nuclear Fission & Fusion Flashcards
Equation
Deuterium - Tritium reaction
21D + 31T → 42He + 10 + energy
Define
Critical size
The critical size of a fuel assembly is the size at which it is just capable of sustaining a chain reaction.
Purpose of
Control rods
Boron-coated steel rods, called control rods are used to absorb excessive neurons.
In a fission reaction how is
Electricity produced
Heat energy produced by fission is removed by coolant which passes its energy to water through a heat exchanger producing steam to drive the turbines which turns electricity producing generators.
In fusion how is
Electricity produced
Most (80%) of the energy produced in fusion is carried away by a neutron with no electrical charge. The neutrons are absorbed into the surrounding walls and their kinetic energy is turned to heat. This is captured by cooling water circulating in the walls which then produces steam and goes on to spin a turbine.
