First-Degree (Superficial) Burns
Involve only the epidermis and produce inflammation with redness, pain, and slight edema. Healing occurs in 3 - 5 days without scarring.
Second Degree (partial thickness) burns
Involve the epidermis and dermis but leave some of the dermis intact. They produce redness, blisters, and more severe pain. Healing occurs in 2 - 3 weeks with minimal scarring.
Third degree (full thickness) burns
Involve the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissues which are often completely destroyed. Healing takes a long time and involves using skin grafts.
Fourth Degree burns
Destroy all layers of the skin and involve tendons, muscles, and sometimes bones.
