What is photolysis?
The light induced break down of water
How is ATP produced in photosynthesis?
The conversion of light energy during photophosphorylation
Describe light dependent reactions.
Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll in PSII. This excited electrons to a higher energy level. The chlorophyll becomes positively charged.
The electrons are passed along an electron transport chain at decreasing energy levels. During each transfer, energy is released. The energy is used to photophosphorylate ADP.
The electrons are transferred to chlorophyll in PSI, where again light energy is absorbed to excite electrons to a higher energy level.
The electrons are accepted by NADP and NADP is reduced. NADP also accepts protons from photolysis of water.
Water is split releasing electrons protons and oxygen.
Electrons return to PSII from water.
