4.4 Variation and evolution Flashcards
Describe Genetic Variation.
Genetic variation is variation caused by combining the male and female genes.
Describe Environmental Variation.
Environmental variation is variation that is influenced by the surrounding environment.
Define Genetic Mutation.
A genetic mutation is a change in one or more genes.
What can cause genetic mutations to occur?
Genetic mutations can occur by DNA replication during cell division, exposure to mutagens or a viral infection.
Define Cystic Fibrosis.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body.
How can you treat Cystic Fibrosis?
Antibiotics and medicines, or a lung transplant if the lung(s) are too severely damaged.
Define Evolution.
Evolution is the change in the characteristics of a species over several generations and relies on the process of natural selection.
Define Natural Selection.
Natural selection is where the environment kills off individuals that are not properly adapted to their surroundings, leaving only the strongest to survive and breed.
Describe Evolution.
Over time, the genetic material changes to better suit the environment.
Define Extinct.
If a species is extinct, there is no living example of that species left on the planet.
Describe the purposes of camouflage.
Camouflage allows a species to hide from predators by masking their location, identity, and movement. It allows them to move undetected.
What is the Human Genome?
The human genome is the complete set of genes.
