4.4 STORMS & WAVES Flashcards
1
Q
What is the meteorological component of sea level (often called ‘the non-tidal residual’)?
A
The part of the sea level that remains once the TIDAL COMPONENT HAS BEEN REMOVED & primarily contains the meteorological contribution to sea level.
2
Q
Tides
A
Cause water to come in/out of basin
Tidal component of sea level further modified by weather (geological factors e.g. storms, waves)
3
Q
Why is understanding the meteorological component of sea level important?
A
- They have a strong influence on sea levels - coastal flooding & can cause considerable damage
- They have a strong influence on currents and sediment transport, and hence coastal erosion
- For design of coastal and offshore structures
- Renewable energy generation
- Recreation e.g. surfing, kayaking
- Navigation (safety at sea)
