4.3.1 measure of development Flashcards
what is the HDI
what 3 factors is it based off of, and how is each measured
give 2 advantages and 2 disadvanatges
the hdi is the human development index, that is a measure of economic development calculated by the UN
it is based off of education, healthcare and income
education=mean years of schooling
healthcare=life expectancy
income= gni per capita
Advantages:
-factors in education, healthcare and income, all factors that give an holistic vew of quality of life.
-relatively easy to calculate as most countries governemnets tend to already collect this data.
Disadvantages:
-Inequality is not accounted for when measuring HDI, e.g. the life expectancy of some citizens within a nation may be very hgh, whereas the life expectancy of others may be considerably lower.
-it coul dbe argued that HDI excludes other important measures of living standards, such as democracy and human rights
