4.3 Operant conditioning Flashcards
operant conditioning
rewards&punishments
Edward Thorndike
law of effect (experiment w a cat)
Shaping
rewards for each baby step on the way to the goal
Primary reinforcement
creates a natural response, has a biological value (food ; water)
Secondary reinforcement
a stimulus that reinforces a behavior after it has been associated with a primary reinforcer
Negative and positive reinforcement
negative - when I take something, positive - when I give something
Positive and negative punishment
Positive - adding stimulus to stop the behavior. Negative - removing stimulus to change the behavior.
Fixed ratio
a reward is given after a certain time passes, or a certain number of actions is reached
Variable ratio
a response is reinforced after an unpredictable number of responses
Fixed interval schedule
reinforcing a response after a certain amount of time
Variable interval schedule
you never know when the reinforcement is coming
Intrinsic motivation
desire to perform for its own sale
Extrinsic motivation
behaving to get a reward or avoid getting punished
Over justification
extrinsic motivation replace intrinsic (repression of motivation)
