Self image
The personal view we have of ourselves, or mental picture.
Self concept
Self image and self esteem. Perception of who you are, knowing your strengths, weaknesses etc.
Self esteem
How we value and feel about ourselves.
Over confidence
More confidence than the average person, excessive.
Ideal self
The person you want to be based on their values, attributes and looks.
Impacts on a child who has a positive self esteem
Helps children face challenges
Find it easier to try new things
Learn and develop well with minimal struggle
Set healthy boundaries
Lower anxiety
Impacts on a child who has a negative self esteem
Feel unsure of themselves
Hesitate to join in on activities
Allow others to treat them poorly
May give up easily or not try at all.
How might children that are over confident present in their behaviour
Strong minded, a good leader, arrogant, selfish, impulsive.
Existential self
Refers to the basic understanding an individual exists as a separate entity from others.
Categorical self
Refers to self awareness. Recognising one self as an object of knowledge that can be categorised based on characteristics and social groups.
