4.2.3 Metabolism Flashcards
1
Q
What happens to the lactic acid produced once you stop exercising?
A
It needs to be removed by the body using oxygen
2
Q
Why do you go red and get out of breath when you exercise?
A
- Blood vessels come closer to the surface of the skin
3
Q
Metabolism
A
The sum of all the chemical reactions that take place in a cell or in the body
4
Q
Metabolic rate
A
The total energy expenditure by an organism at a specific period of time
5
Q
Examples of metabolic reactions (8p)
A
- Respiration
- Photosynthesis
- Protein synthesis
- DNA replication
- Glucose to starch or cellulose
- Active transport
- Production of bile in the liver
- Formation of fats from fatty acids and glycerol
6
Q
Key metabolism organ
A
Liver
7
Q
What is unusual about the livers blood supply? (2p)
A
- 2 vessels going in and 1 going out
- 1 to supply oxygenated blood, 1 to supply digested food
8
Q
Functions of the liver (5p)
A
- Detoxifying poisonous substances, eg. Ethanol, drugs
- Passing the breakdown products in the blood so they can be excreted in the urine via the kidneys
- Breaks down old worn out blood cells and stores the iron u till it’s needed to make more red blood cells
- Making bile
- Converting lactic acid back into glucose
9
Q
The liver is an organ of respiration- true (3p)
A
- Liver carries out lots of metabolic processes that require energy
- Therefore has to carry out aerobic respiration to provide energy for these processes
- Like producing bile or breaking down excess amino acids
10
Q
The liver is an organ of respiration - false
A
All organs carry out respiration
