4.2.1 Alcohols Flashcards
are alcohols polar or non-polar?
polar (there is a large difference in electronegativity between O and C
are alcohols water soluble or non-soluble?
soluble
why are alcohols water soluble?
the O is very electronegative and can hydrogen bond to water molecules
what are alcohols?
organic compounds that contain hydroxyl groups (OH)
what is the general formula for alcohols?
CnH2n+1OH
what are the two main methods of producing alcohols?
fermentation and hydration
how are alcohols classified?
primary, secondary and tertiary
what is a primary alcohol?
the C atom the OH is bonded to, is bonded to one other C
what is a secondary alcohol?
the C atom the OH is bonded to, is bonded to 2 other C
what is a tertiary alcohol?
the C atom the OH is bonded to, is bonded to to 3 other C
are alcohols more or less volatile than alkanes?
far less
why are alcohols less volatile than alkanes?
alkanes only have London forces whereas alcohols have hydrogen bonds too
hydrogen bonds require much more energy to break than London forces
alcohols + oxygen —>
complete combustion
carbon dioxide + water (+energy)
are alcohols good fuels?
yes
why are alcohols good fuels?
when they are completely combusted, they release lots of energy
